DEC upgrades signs at 38 bird-watching areas

The state Department of Environmental Conservation added "I Bird NY" signage upgrades to improve bird watching at its 38 priority Bird Conservation Areas statewide.

Several are in Western New York.

Among the locations: the wildlife management areas at Tonawanda and Oak Orchard in Erie, Genesee, Niagara and Orleans counties; Carlton Hill in Wyoming County; Keeney Swamp in Allegany County and Tillman Road in Clarence.

The Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve & Environmental Education Center in Depew is also included on that list.

Reinstein Woods will host a pair of "Birding 101" events in upcoming weeks for interested birders ages 8 and older, including one at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday's lecture will teach visitors about identifying different birds of prey in Reinstein Woods. Another event about the birds of the winter season is scheduled Oct. 21.
