The University at Buffalo's new fieldhouse will have a familiar name attached to it.
The UB Council endorsed a resolution on Monday to name the building the Murchie Family Fieldhouse in honor of former UB hockey player Tunney Murchie and his family.
The Murchie family made a record gift to the athletics department that has helped make the long-awaited fieldhouse a reality. The previous largest gift came in 2016, when Murchie donated $3 million for a major expansion of the football center.
"This is a family contribution," Murchie said. "We will continue to do this to try and establish a legacy in return for all the fine things the school has provided our family. This is also a commitment to UB having a significant FBS football program."
The official groundbreaking ceremony for the 92,000-square-foot building will take place Oct. 7, with an opening scheduled for the spring of 2019.
