Lancaster holds at No. 2, Canisius moves up in state football poll

It's that time of the week as the New York State Sportswriters football poll has been released.

While the 4-0 Legends of Lancaster remain in the No. 2 spot behind fellow unbeaten Troy of Section II, the defending state champion, the biggest attention-getter upon glancing at Class AA poll is Canisius inching its way closer to the top five.

The Crusaders moved up four spots from No. 10 to No. 6 following its 55-16 win over St. Joe's. Perhaps its win over Section V's Pittsford in Week One factored into their rise four spots because Pittsford handed previously fifth-ranked Victor its first loss last Friday. The triumph over last year's state runner-up moved the Panthers up from No. 23 to No. 10 and dropped Victor, which has a win over 17th-ranked Aquinas, to No. 13.

Jamestown, also 4-0,  moved up two spots in Class AA to No. 18. The other unbeaten AA team in WNY, Williamsville North, is among the honorable mention heading into Thursday night's division clash at Jamestown.

In Class A, Starpoint is at No. 6, followed by West Seneca West at No. 9 and South Park at No. 15. All three are unbeaten through four games.

Five Class B teams earned spots in the state poll, beginning with No. 11 Maryvale (4-0). Others include No. 14 Cheektowaga (3-1), No. 15 Dunkirk (4-0), No. 17 Lackawanna (4-0) and No. 23 Albion. Albion (4-0) is new to the poll, moving up from honorable mention a week ago.

In Class C, Cleveland Hill is eighth, followed by Southwestern (17th) and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley in at 20th after missing the top 20 last week. All three are 3-1.

Franklinville/Ellicottville (4-0) is ranked eighth, Maple Grove (3-1) 11th and Clymer/Sherman/Panama (4-0) is 17th in Class D.
