Mary Howard, a sixth-grade teacher at Grand Island Central School District's Veronica E. Connor Middle School was selected as one of five finalists for the 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year Award.
Brockport Schools' fourth-grade teacher Christopher Albrecht was selected the teacher of the year.
Howard said her only regret in not coming home with the top award was disappointing her students. She said she encourages her students to express themselves and be fearless because risks, even academic ones, can lead to great things.
"There was no better way for me to model this than to go through the teacher of the year selection process," she said, according to an announcement of her accomplishment.
Howard received her finalist award on Sept. 12 at the New York State Board of Regent's meeting.
