UB, Florida Atlantic mirror images heading into Saturday's game

The University at Buffalo and Florida Atlantic University are on similar paths to start their respective seasons.

Both began 0-2 with losses to a military academy and a school from the Big Ten Conference, and both picked up wins last week against schools from the Football Championship Subdivision.

Their paths collide when the Bulls and Owls meet at UB Stadium at 7 p.m. Saturday.

UB is fresh off a 33-10 home-opening win against Colgate after losing to Minnesota and Army by a combined 14 points.

Sophomore Emmanuel Reed rushed for a career-high 120 yards and scored his first career TD.

Quarterback Tyree Jackson also posted a career-high in rushing with 97 yards on 12 carries. He has thrown for one touchdown in each game this season and has ran for another in the last two.

Receiver Anthony Johnson has 16 catches for 282 yards and two scores on the year.

FAU of Conference USA has a prominent new coach in Lane Kiffin, whose tenure opened with losses to Navy and Wisconsin and a 45-0 win against Bethune-Cookman.

The Owls set a program record in the drubbing last week with 439 rushing yards, including 175 yards and a touchdown from Buddy Howell.

For fans of the Netflix series “Last Chance U,” Kiffin has brought four of the show’s stars to the program: QB De’Andre Johnson, WR John Franklin III, DE Tim Bonner and tight ends coach Clint Trickett.

Johnson was the projected starter at QB but had surgery for two blood clots in his arm and is out indefinitely. Redshirt sophomore Daniel Parr has started in his place.

UB came away with a 33-15 win at FAU in 2015 in the only prior meeting.
