Homeroom Announcements: Monday's big games & more

Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Monday

1. Boys soccer - Lancaster at Clarence, 5 p.m.

No. 1 large school Clarence (5-1, 3-0) hosts No. 6 Lancaster (5-1-1, 3-1) in the top game on Monday's schedule.

Both teams have a +14 goal differential. The Legends have 23 goals on the season, but the Red Devils are a little more sound defensively with only two goals against.

Clarence lost, 1-0, at Cathedral Prep yesterday. Lancaster lost to No. 2 Williamsville North, 2-0, back on Aug. 29.

2. Boys soccer - Canisius at St. Joe's, 4:30 p.m.

Defending-champ Canisius (3-2, 2-0) visits No. 5 large school St. Joe's (6-1, 3-0) in a rematch of last year's Monsignor Martin championship game.

The Marauders have yet to yield a goal in their six wins this season. Their loss came to No. 1 Clarence, 2-1, on Aug. 31. Quality wins include I-Prep/Grover and Grand Island.

The Crusaders have won three straight against Bishop Timon-St. Jude, Nichols and V-Bishop Kearney after losing 2-1 to V-Aquinas and 1-0 to No. 3 East Aurora to open the season.

3. Girls soccer - Newfane at Akron, 4:30 p.m.

Niagara-Orleans League rivals No. 6 small school Newfane (5-1-1, 4-0-1) and No. 7 Akron (3-2, 3-1) play for the second time in five days.

The Panthers won, 2-0, at Akron last Thursday behind goals from Emily Foltz and Kayleigh Daniels and six saves from keeper Madalyn Traverse.

The Tigers have been off since the loss last Thursday. Their wins have come against Albion, Medina and Wilson and the other loss came to Hamburg.

4. Field hockey - Amherst at Williamsville East, 7 p.m.

No. 3 Williamsville East (3-1) welcomes No. 10 Amherst (3-1) for a showdown under the lights.

The Flames got an exciting 2-1 victory against crosstown rival Williamsville South last Friday. Emily Turton scored the game-winning goal off a corner play.

The Tigers have back-to-back home wins against Lancaster, 4-2, and Starpoint, 6-0.

5. Girls volleyball - Hamburg at Williamsville South, 6 p.m.

No. 7 Hamburg (2-2, 1-1) heads to No. 6 Williamsville South (2-2, 2-1) for an ECIC II matchup.

In league play, the Billies beat West Seneca East and Lake Shore and lost to Williamsville East. They lost to Niagara Wheatfield in nonleague play.

The Bulldogs have wins over Grand Island and Amherst and losses to Williamsville East and Lancaster in a five-set match last Thursday.
