An unknown number of thieves broke into a William Street laundromat after it closed Saturday night and stole $50,000 worth of credit-card scanners, as well as the business' security system, a store official told police.
The burglary took place between 11 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday at the Billy Bubbles Laundromat, 465 William St., at Jefferson Avenue. The store representative said the thief, or thieves, may have entered the store through an unlocked outside door before kicking in an office and closet door.
The stolen security system included a 32-inch TV monitor and USB connection cords. The credit-card scanners were in two separate boxes. The burglar, or burglars, also tried to pry open the coin boxes before leaving the tools at the scene. The store's camera system wasn't active at the time, police said.
