[BN] Blitz Bills newsletter: What to know for Saturday, Sept. 16

When the Bills play the Panthers this weekend, you may notice a familiar name on the opposing sideline.

If you're a fan of local college basketball, that is.

Chris Manhertz, a former forward on the Canisius men's basketball team, is now a tight end for the Panthers. How on earth did that happen?

His story has been told before, but never in Tim Graham fashion. How about this for a detail: After a workout one day, a video of Manhertz was sent to NFL coaches. When Manhertz got back to his car, he realized he locked his keys inside. Then his phone started to blow up: The Saints decided to sign him in less time than it took for AAA to show up.

Is LeSean McCoy good to go? The Bills star running back got a "rest day" Friday and was also dealing with a groin issue, but coach Sean McDermott said he was "very confident" McCoy will be ready to go.

So, what if the Bills win Sunday? That would change everything, right? Vic Carucci examines what that would mean in his Bills analysis.

"All of the eggs are in baskets marked '2018' and beyond," he wrote. "They still are. They still can be."

Sean McDermott isn't making this a homecoming: Bills players "don't need to win anything for me," their coach said.

Matchups to watch: Mark Gaughan lists the three biggest matchups to watch in Bills-Panthers. Of note: The Panthers linebackers are so fast that they often stay in their base 4-3 personnel against three-wide receiver sets. Can LeSean McCoy exploit that in the passing game? Or, if they switch to nickel and bring in an extra defensive back, can McCoy beat that on the ground?

If you like the matchups post, you'll like this: Mark Gaughan's Play to Watch from the Panthers is a seam route to tight end Greg Olson.

Jerry Sullivan: Bills need to take their scoring show on the road

Wait, what? Bills fans dislike the Patriots more than anyone, right? Not so, according to a new poll. Six other fanbases apparently dislike the Patriots more than Bills fans.

Sean McDermott loves beating players at ping pong: Yep. Really.

When Jordan Mills hears a "YEAHHH!" in the locker room, it can only be caused by two things ... and both of them involve McDermott winning at ping pong.

Mailbag: Should the NFL take more responsibility in growing the next generation of quarterbacks for the good of the game?

College games to watch Saturday: The top quarterback prospects are all on TV Saturday:

• Josh Rosen and UCLA are on ABC at noon.
• Mason Rudolph and Oklahoma State are on ESPN at noon.
• Josh Allen and Wyoming are on CBSSN at 7 p.m.
• Sam Darnold and USC are on FOX at 7:30 p.m.
• Lamar Jackson and Louisville are on ABC at 8 p.m.

Inside the Bills: You're going to like Mike Tolbert, Jay Skurski wrote.

Did Week One games seem faster to you? Well, they were, on average. Ten of 15 games finished in less than three hours, Vic Carucci noted. It's only one week, but it's a step in the right direction.

Fantasy advice: If Jared Goff shredded the Colts, you should start the quarterback playing them this week, too.

What they said: Read through Sean McDermott's Friday press conference.

Power rankings: Vic Carucci ranks all 32 teams after Week One.

Around the NFL: Bengals fire OC after 0-2 start, just like Bills last year
