Bill Wharton cooks up gumbo, music for the needy

Bill Wharton does more than play the blues. He cooks up a mighty fine Gumbo - and likes to help others out, too.

So at 5 p.m. Sept. 14 at Friends of the Night People (394 Hudson St.), the "Sauce Boss" will cook a 60-quart pot of Gumbo to feed the homeless as part of his “Planet Gumbo” charity that helps raise community awareness of the plight of the homeless. Afterward, he'll get out his guitar and play the blues.

The following day, Wharton will be back at it again with music and more gumbo in concert at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at Duke’s Bohemian Grove Bar (253 Allen St.).
