Vacant house near Boys and Girls Club in Depew to be razed for green space

A long-vacant property in the Village of Depew will be demolished this week and turned into green space for the Depew-Lancaster Boys and Girls Club, said Depew Mayor Jesse Nikonowicz.

The house at 511 Terrace Blvd. had been vacant since 2012 when the bank started foreclosure proceedings, raising concerns that it would become another zombie property, Nikonowicz said.

On Monday, utility workers turned off power to the structure and cleared the way for demolition later this week, Nikonowicz said.

"This is a significant step for the Village of Depew and will be a big change here at the corner of Terrace Boulevard," said Jocelyn Gordon, executive director of the Buffalo Erie Niagara land bank. "The overgrown vegetation and crumbling house that people had become accustomed to will be replaced by an open and inviting green area, just steps away from the Boys and Girls Club."
