Daemen freshman Amber Custodi (Lew-Port) finished third among 141 female entrants in the Finger Lakes Triathlon. Custodi, recently named an All-Region honoree by the College Triathlon Coaches Association following her performance in a Central Regional Qualifier last week, posted a time of 1 hour, 20 minutes and 18 seconds in Sunday’s competition.
Seniors Jennifer Igoe and Nichole Geiger (Orchard Park), and sophomore Carly Scott all faired well for the Wildcats. Igoe finished ninth in 1:29:39 and was first among females in the 20-24 age bracket. Geiger (1:30:58) was the 12th female to finish, and the third in the 20-24 age bracket. Scott, who made her Daemen debut, placed 50th overall and fifth in the female 20-24 age bracket in 1:45.26..
In men’s soccer, Jamie O’Grady headed in a goal in the 16th minute to give Hartwick a 1-0 victory over Niagara in the championship game of the Mayor’s Cup Sunday in Oneonta. Midfielder Bautista Pedezert and goalkeeper Joel Gerberich of the Purple Eagles (1-5-0) were named to the all-tournament team.
Junior Alex Grattarola scored two goals and senior Marco Trivellato posted his second shutout of the season to power Canisius to a 4-0 victory over Central Connecticut State at the Demske Sports Complex. Sophomore Troy Brady (Grand Island) and freshman Filippo Tamburini also scored for the Golden Griffins (3-1-0), who extended their winning streak to four games.
Daemen (2-3) scored four goals in a game for the first time since 2011 but lost to Bloomsburg (Pa.) University, 5-4, in a nonconference game at Karrer Field in Snyder. The Wildcats got off to a fast start when Victor Lanje and Finn Krueger scored the first two goals of the game. Kristian Aadnoy made it 3-1 and Samuel Lockman had the fourth Daemen goal in the second half.
In women’s soccer, the University at Buffalo (1-4-1) owned a 2-0 lead but ended up with a 2-2 draw against Fairleigh Dickinson at UB Stadium. Gurjeena Jandu and Carissima Cutrona (Williamsville South) netted the goals for UB.
Sophomore Jamie Boyar (Williamsville South) netted a pair of goals and freshman goalkeeper Katelin White (Lew-Port) recorded 11 saves to lead Daemen’s 2-0 victory over Tiffin University in a non-conference game at Karrer Field. In picking up its second consecutive win, Daemen improved to 2-1-1 on the season.
