Saturday's intriguing football games

Starpoint Spartans (1-0) vs. Kenmore West Blue Devils (1-0), 2 p.m., Crosby Field. An intriguing matchup between a pair of teams that have been on recent runs of success in different classifications until an enrollment dip resulted in Kenmore West dropping into the same classification as two-time Class A North Division champion Starpoint.

It should be interesting with Starpoint trying to assert itself via a ground game fueled by veteran Anthony Robinson, who rushed for 146 yards and a 19-yard touchdown run. Five different players scored in the Spartans' 35-0 triumph last week over Williamsville East.

While a strong ground game has been Starpoint's M.O., returning quarterback Aaron Chase has shown the ability to make plays with his arm, completing 13 passes for 166 yards last week. Sam Mazzara had a fine all-around game, catching six passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, notching an interception, defending two passes and making three tackles. Starpoint lost in the final last year.

Joseph Stewart had a solid game last week in helping Ken West win its home opener in renovated Crosby Field, rushing 17 times for 80 yards. He finished with two touchdowns, one of them a reception. Two different players completed touchdown passes for the Blue Devils in that triumph over former Class AA rival Niagara Falls with Andrew Fron completing 5-of-6 for 46 yards and Faisal Ahmadi hooking up on a 64-yard play with Cameron Crosier. Ken West lost in the AA final in 2015.

Among the other intriguing games on the docket:

  • Nichols Vikings (0-0) at St. Mary's of Lancaster Lancers (1-0), 1 p.m. at St. Mary's.: After having a bye to open the season, the new-look Vikings, merged with Central Christian Academy and Niagara Catholic, debut against a St. Mary's team that matched last season's win total in last Saturday's 33-0 win at Bishop Timon-St. Jude. Nichols, which is an independent, is trying to win for the first time in a while. Vikings, who are about providing an opportunity to teach the game to enthusiastic kids, went winless last year.
  • Jamestown Red Raiders (1-0) vs. Hutch-Tech, 1 p.m. at All High Stadium: A bonus game for you fans out there as the teams' attempt to play Thursday night in a Class AA matchup was foiled by a series of lightning delays that prevented the start of the contest. Jamestown is coming off a season-opening win at Frontier, while Hutch-Tech is trying to bounce back from a 28-0 loss at Williamsville North.
  • Lancaster Legends (1-0) at Lockport Lions (0-1), 2 p.m. at Max D. Lederer Field: Both teams combined for 91 points in their opening games, with Lancaster amassing 49 as the defending Section VI Class AA champions rolled Bennett. Lockport suffered a tough one-point loss to Niagara Wheatfield on the road last Saturday.
  • Lewiston-Porter Lancers (0-1) at Newfane Panthers (0-1), 7 p.m. at Newfane: Prime-time football returns for the Panthers, who usually play their games under the sun. Newfane is hosting a night game for just the second time ever, bringing in portable lights so that players and fans can experience the unique thrill of night-time football. Last time Newfane did this was 2015, attracting a crowd of more than 1,500.
