Homeroom Announcements: Saturday's big games & more

We know there's no homeroom today. But we're up and ready to go.

Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Saturday

1. Football - Starpoint at Kenmore West, 2 p.m.

The top game on Saturday comes in Class A North between Starpoint (1-0, 1-0) and Kenmore West (1-0, 0-0), which dropped down from Class AA this season. The Spartans shut out Williamsville East last week, 35-0, behind a stellar defense that allowed only 150 yards of offense. The Blue Devils picked up a 23-14 nonleague win against Niagara Falls in Week One.

Other games to keep an eye on:

  • Jamestown vs. Hutch-Tech, 1 p.m. at All High Stadium
  • Lew-Port at Newfane, 7 p.m.
  • V-Bishop Kearney at Bishop Timon-St. Jude, 7 p.m.

The Jamestown-Hutch-Tech matchup was postponed from Thursday night due to prolonged lightning delays. The Red Raiders won a 22-20 Class AA game at Frontier in Week One. The Engineers were shut out at Class AA foe Williamsville North, 28-0.

Newfane rented lights for tonight's home game against Lew-Port. The last time the school did that, 1,500 people came out. The Panthers and Lancers are looking for their first wins of the season after last week's losses to Lackawanna and Cheektowaga, respectively.

Head coach Joe Licata gets another crack at his first win at Timon when Section V's Bishop Kearney comes to Tifft Farm. The Tigers were shut out last Saturday by St. Mary's of Lancaster, 33-0. Kearney lost at Cattaraugus/Little Valley last week, 24-20.

The 24-team tournament features the top teams in Western New York (Lockport, Canisius, Eden), Rochester (Fairport, Penfield, McQuaid) and one from Ontario in Stratford. The top two seeds from each of the four-team pools earn a spot in the gold bracket. Tournament starts at 8 a.m.

North Tonawanda is also hosting a tournament, starting at 8:30 a.m.

3. Girls volleyball - St. Mary's Tournament

Many of the top teams in Western New York on the girls side will be at the annual St. Mary's Tournament in Lancaster. Pool play starts at 8:30 a.m.

There are also other tournaments on today's schedule at Albion, Cheektowaga and the SNI Cattaraugus Community Center. All start at 8 a.m.
