Helping people in need is the right thing to do
A recent letter in The News wonders whether, with our generosity to the rest of the world, we receive offers to help and donations from others when tragedy strikes our nation, as in the recent case of Hurricane Harvey. Even asking that question raises the awful spectre of a “tit for tat” world where all of our actions depend on what we get in return and concepts of need and generosity and the Golden Rule fall by the wayside.
We, who have the most, must be willing to give the most – not because anyone else does or doesn’t – but because it’s the right thing to do. And by the way, anyone who looks will find numerous occasions when the people of the world have rushed to America’s aid (in many forms) whenever we have been in need – for no other reason than that it’s the right thing to do.
