UB archaeologists to excavate site of first U.S. natural gas well – in Fredonia

Archaeologists intend to excavate the site of the first natural gas well in the United States at 85 Main St. in Fredonia this month.

Evidence gained from the effort, dubbed I Dig Fredonia's Firsts, will strengthen the efforts of the Hart Gas Well Committee for historic site status with the state Historic Preservation Office.

Douglas Perrelli, a University at Buffalo professor, will direct a team of student archaeologists for the exploratory dig Sept. 15 and 16. The event is open to the public and school groups. Members of the committee will be at the site to explain the history of the well.

William Hart dug the first well in the United States in Fredonia in 1825, and started the company that was the precursor to National Fuel.
