Amherst sets public hearing for proposed Northtown Center hotel

The Amherst Town Board will hold a public hearing on Oct. 9 on the rezoning change required for an $11 million hotel proposed for the Northtown Center.

The 3-acre parcel at 1615 Amherst Manor Drive would change from recreation conservation to general business zoning to make way for the four-story, 105-room Hampton by Hilton hotel. Uniland Development Co. would build and operate the hotel and make annual payments to the town.

Amherst would lose 3 acres of green space but gain as parkland 26.6 acres between North French and Casey roads.

The Planning Board in August recommended rejecting the rezoning, saying the town already had too many hotels in that area and it should preserve its recreational space.

The Town Board on Tuesday voted to set the hearing date.
