Rock party is all about the message in the rocks

Rockin' at the Hub is not about rock music. It is literally about rocks – painting them.

The event will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at the new bicycle hub, at 36 Young St., Tonawanda. Hosted by the City of Tonawanda Waterfront Planning Committee and City of Tonawanda Recreation Department, it picks up on a national trend of painting rocks with inspirational messages and hiding them for others to find. Local finds can be shared at #tonawandarocks.

Kindness Rocks is a treasure hunt, similar to the Pokemon Go phenomenon, but rocks are hidden randomly to pick up and keep or pass along.

Parks Director Amanda Loftt said a painted rock can lift the spirit of someone who finds it.

Reservations can be made at recreation@tonawandacity.com. Materials will be provided.

What's the story behind all those painted rocks?
