Correction officer charged in Grand Island hit-and-run suspended without pay

The correction officer arrested Wednesday for leaving the scene of a hit-and-run in June that left a Grand Island woman with a traumatic brain injury has been placed on leave without pay from his job, the state Department of Corrections said Friday.

Edward J. Kuebler III, 27, of the Town of Tonawanda, has been an officer at Wende Correctional Facility since 2014. He earns a salary of $50,711.

Kuebler was charged with leaving the scene of a serious personal injury incident, a felony, in connection with the accident that injured Dana Papaj.

Papaj, 53, suffered a serious head injury when she was struck by a pickup truck while walking her dog, Molly, on the shoulder of East River Road, between Whitehaven Road and Riverwoods Drive, just after 8 p.m. June 13.
