Amherst named Clean Energy Community by state

The state has named Amherst a Clean Energy Community -- recognizing the town's efforts to reduce energy use, cut costs and promote clean energy.

The designation by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority gives the town a chance to apply for up to $250,000 toward future clean energy projects, with no local cost share.

To receive the NYSERDA designation, Amherst initiated the Solarize Amherst campaign to reduce solar project costs through joint purchasing; streamlined the approvals process for solar projects; added an electric vehicle to the town's fleet; and completed energy code enforcement training for code compliance officers and other town officials.

The town plans to apply for money to install a solar array on the roof of the Clearfield Recreation Center.
