Brett McKenzie scored the only goal of the shoot out while Mat Woroniuk saved all three shots he faced as the North Bay Battalion defeated the Kitchener Rangers, 4-3, in a shoot out in HarborCenter as the Ontario Hockey League preseason showcase kicked off at the downtown Buffalo rink.
Kitchener took a 1-0 first period lead on a goal from Connor Bunnaman. The teams traded goals in the second with Andy Baker (North Bay) and Greg Meireles (Kitchener) scoring. Then came a crazy third with North Bay taking a 3-2 lead. Luke Moncada scoring 26 seconds into the period and Justin Brazeau scoring at 2;15. Kitchener tied the game when Bunnaman scored with 36 seconds left sending the game to a shoot out.
The Windsor Spitfires scored three times in the second period to earn a 4-3 win over the Flint Firebirds. Flint took a 1-0 lead in the first on a goal from Hunter Holes. In the second, Chris Playfair scored twice for Windsor with a tally from Joseph Mizzi giving the Spitfires a 3-1 lead. Ty Dellandrea scored on the power play in the second for Flint, cutting the lead to 3-2. But Igor Larionov scored 1:45 into the third to give Windsor a two-goal cushion. A goal from Kyle Harris at 9:02 for the Firebirds closed out the scoring.
In the final game of the day, Cade Robinson scored a power-play goal at 5:32 of the second period to help the Erie Otters to a 4-1 win over the Peterborough Petes. Mitchell Mendonca opened the scoring for Erie in the first with Nick Isaacson scoring with one second left for Peterborough to tie the game. With a 2-1 lead, Patrick Fellows gave Erie a 3-1 lead and Josh Wainman sealed it with an empty-netter.
