Parts of the old Old Lake Shore Road between Wanakah and Lake View in the town of Hamburg already have fallen off a cliff into Lake Erie.

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon fears continued erosion may begin making the newer roadway there unsafe as well.

Dixon, in a letter to Sen. Charles Schumer, asked for federal money to fix it.

"I have visited the eroding section of Old Lake Shore Road on numerous occasions, and you can literally see where the old guardrail now lays, hanging over the cliff because so much of the land has already fallen off," Dixon said. "The erosion isn't stopping and we have a roadway and houses in jeopardy."

The Southtowns lawmaker noted that Schumer visited a low-lying area in Athol Springs earlier this summer, promising funds to repair an old retaining wall where Lake Erie washes over Route 5.
