Yahoo's new owner awards $427,826 in grants in Niagara County

Oath, the Verizon company that now owns Yahoo, announced 20 grants totaling $427,826 to Niagara County-area groups and projects Tuesday.

Oath inherited Yahoo's commitment to make up to $500,000 a year in local grants through 2021 as a condition of the state incentives it received toward construction of its data and call centers in Lockport.

The largest grant Tuesday was $100,000 to the Western New York Land Conservancy for its effort to improve wildlife habitat and public access in the Niagara River Gorge.

The Historic Palace Theatre in Lockport received $50,000 to refurbish its ticket office. The Lockport chapter of the Salvation Army received $30,000 to support its "Bridging the Gap" program for at-risk teenagers, and the Lockport Locks Heritage District was granted $30,000 toward its plan for 14 bronze sculptures at the locks.

Other grants included:

Old Fort Niagara Association, $30,750 for a 2017-2018 local history program that will tour area schools.

Lockport CARES, $24,917 for beds and security measures at its homeless shelter.

Literacy New York Buffalo Niagara, $13,575 to establish an adult literacy drop-in center in Niagara Falls and $10,000 for a similar center in Lockport.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County, $20,913 for an agricultural education program.

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, $19,557 for a 60-student health care job training program in cooperation with Niagara County Community College.

Canisius College, $18,500 to expand its Women's Business Center E-Network into Niagara County.

Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club, $15,000 toward its Full STEAM Ahead after-school program.

Dale Association, $13,019 to pay for the purchase of tablets for use by schoolchildren in the association's intergenerational writing program.

Cornerstone Arena, $12,375 for a skating instruction program.

BISON Children's Scholarship Fund, $10,000 to help pay for seven low-income Lockport-area children to attend the private school of their choice in 2017-18.

DeSales Catholic School, $8,217 for a space education project.

Youth Mentoring Services of Niagara County, $6,512 for building improvements.

Lockport High School robotics team, $5,000 for next year's project.

Leadership Niagara, $4,800 for tuition assistance for Lockport-area residents.

Niagara County Historical Society, $4,671 to train middle and high school students as junior docents.

The grant recipients were chosen by Empire State Development and announced at the Yahoo center Tuesday.
