Beer notes: Zwanze at Thin Man, Buffalo RiverKeeper fundraiser

Octoberfest release, Zwanze Day at Thin Man

Thin Man Brewery (492 Elmwood Ave.) will release its Octoberfest beer on Sept. 1. The 6.2 percent ABV (alcohol by volume) lager is a showcase for German malt and hops, and should pair perfectly with the cooler late summer weather.

Thin Man also will host Cantillon’s Zwanze Day for the second year in a row. Limited tickets (160) are $25 (eventbrite.com) and include one six-ounce pour of Zwanze 2017 (a "Game of Thrones"-inspired blend of tea and lambic beer), one pour of a different Cantillon beer, and a commemorative glass. The brewery will be open to the public during the event. Call 923-4100.

Get educated at Gene McCarthy’s

Gene McCarthy’s (73 Hamburg St.) is bringing back its popular Beer School series, a 10-month course taught by brewer Bryan Kirchmyer and Bill Metzger. Beer School takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, starting Sept. 20.

The cost per evening is $25, which gets attendees a pint of beer from Old First Ward Brewing Company and beer samples paired with a food buffet. Those wishing to prepay for all 10 can pay only $200. Tickets are available at the bar or online here. Call 855-8948.

Local breweries featured at RiverKeeper fundraiser

Buffalo Niagara Riverkeepers will hold its annual fundraising event from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 31 aboard the USS Little Rock. The evening includes music and silent auctions, with hors d’oeuvres and beverages from Community Beer Works, Resurgence, Great Lakes Brewing and more. Tickets are $40 (available here or at the door).

New beers from 12 Gates

12 Gates Brewing Company (80 Earhart Drive, East Amherst) will release its Fest Bier (Munich-style lager) at noon Sept. 1. To celebrate, the brewery will have German music playing, Bavarian pretzels ($7) a stein hoisting competition at 6 p.m.

The brewery also has two new beers on tap: a pilot batch of Coconut Amber (dark and roasty amber ale aged on toasted organic coconut for a smooth and clean finish), and its House IPA (D.A.F.), a 5.9 percent ABV India pale ale hopped with Simcoe and Cascade.

12 Gates’ entire staff also recently completed their Certified Beer Server certification from the Cicerone Program. Call 906-6600.

Get sour and peachy at Resurgence

Resurgence Brewing Company (1250 Niagara St.) has released its new peach gose. The 4.7 percent ABV lightly sour beer is refreshing and full of fresh peach flavor, with a touch of saltiness, and is perfect for those new to the style. Call 381-9868.

ABV welcomes Shelton Brothers

Allen Burger Venture (175 Allen St.) will have beers from importer/distributor Shelton Brothers on tap from Sept. 1 to 3. The full list is available here and includes beers from Mikkeller, De Ranke, Dieu du Ciel, Jester King and Fantome. Call 768-0386.
