Woodlawn Beach State Park will not have swimming Saturday, because there are not enough lifeguards.
Many of the lifeguards are college students who have returned to school, Hamburg Recreation Director Martin Denecke said.
This happens every year toward the end of August, he said. In these cases, the town alternates swimming at Woodlawn and at Hamburg Town Park, which it also staffs.
"We go down from 30-some guards to 10 or 12, then there are days when certain people can't make it," he said, adding that there are just a handful of lifeguards who can work Saturday.
"There's no way we can open Woodlawn," he said.
He said he does not know if there will be enough lifeguards to staff Labor Day weekend.
