Kenmore man who struck tree charged with DWI

A Kenmore man was charged with driving while intoxicated Tuesday after the vehicle he was driving struck a tree in the City of Tonawanda, according to authorities.

Andrew R. Schlegel, 33, of Wabash Avenue, was also charged with driving at an unreasonable speed in a rainstorm, making an improper left turn and unsafe lane usage, after crashing into a tree at about 2 p.m. at the corner of Canton Street and Cranbrook Drive, according to City of Tonawanda Police.

City of Tonawanda Police said Schlegel told officers who responded to the crash that he had been "doing shots of vodka" at a bar before the crash.

Police said Schlegel refused all breath tests. His bail was set at $1,000, authorities said.
