The Aquarium of Niagara's new harbor seal pup has a new name: Zara.
The announcement comes after a week of public voting between two names, Dill or Zara, an aquarium spokeswoman said.
The first harbor seal pup to be born at the aquarium in 30 years arrived July 13.
Zara was first suggested by the aquarium’s executive director, Gary Siddall, to represent the pup’s mother, Zoey, an 8-year-old harbor seal who was rescued and has been at the aquarium since 2012.
Pickles, a 9-year-old harbor seal who came to the aquarium from SeaWorld San Antonio in May 2016, is the pup's father.
Harbor seal pups wean between four to six weeks, the spokeswoman said. Zara is entering that stage soon, and her next milestone will be eating fish and developing a trusting relationship with trainers.
