Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson had the three best odds to win the PGA Championship this week at Quail Hollow, no surprise considering they also had the best odds last year when 125-1 longshot Jimmy Walker captured the Wanamaker Trophy.
McIlroy was at 7-1 based on his history at Quail Hollow, his success in the tournament and his recent play. He owns the course record (61), twice won the Wells Fargo and twice won the PGA Championship. He has finished in the Top 10 six times this year and is coming off two Top 5s.
This tournament often brings out the unexpected, however. John Daly was a nobody when he won in 1991. Tiger Woods was in the prime of his career when David Toms (2001), Rich Beem (2002) and Shaun Micheel (2003) came from the shadows. Don't forget Y.E. Yang in 2009.
Keegan Bradley, who won in 2011, faces 150-1 odds this week. I'm pulling for 150-1 longshot Steve Stricker. At 50, he would become the oldest to win a major. The course demands players hit fairways, and he's the most accurate driver on tour. He's also 21st in scoring average. I wouldn't bet against him.
