The Niagara County Legislature has called a special meeting for 6 p.m. Thursday to vote on asking for local, state and federal criminal investigations of the Niagara Falls Water Board in the wake of a July 29 discharge of black water into the Niagara River near the Maid of the Mist dock.
The Legislature no longer is calling for the resignation of the board, as its Republican leaders did in a news conference last week that attacked the Democrat-controlled Water Board. There is one Republican appointee on the board.
The board issued a statement Friday that attributed the discharge to an employee being called away from his post while a tank was being drained, causing pumps to run too long.
Thursday's meeting will be held in the County Courthouse in Lockport.
