Back for another year is the second annual Tour de Cask festival at Flying Bison Brewing Company (840 Seneca St.) from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept 3. The event is organized by the Buffalo Beer Goddesses, and is a fundraiser for the group’s Cicerone Scholarship program.
Tickets are limited, include a half pint of each cask and food, cost $30 ($25 for BBG members), and are available only at www.buffalobeergoddesses.com. The event will feature special casks of beer from many local breweries. Attendees who ride their bikes to the event will also receive an additional drink token. The event sold out quickly last year, so get your tickets early.
42 North claims medal
42 North Brewing Company (25 Pine St., East Aurora) was recently awarded a silver medal in the Session IPA category for its Creekside Session Ale at the U.S. Open Beer Championship, which featured over 6,000 beers from 100 different beer styles. Creekside Session ale is 42 North’s 4.8 percent ABV beer featuring El Dorado and Sorachi Ace hops. Call 805-7500.
Community Beer Works on a roof?
The Broadway Market (999 Broadway St.) will team up with Community Beer Works for Up on Roof Barbecue and Brews from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug 12. Enjoy panoramic view of the city alongside beers for sale from Community Beer Works and barbecue for sale from Broadway Market vendors at this admission-free event. Music will be provided by Empress and the Royals.
CBW will also host a weekly tournament board-game night on Wednesdays, beginning Aug. 9 with Connect Four at their brewery location (15 Lafayette Ave.). The tournament is limited to 25 people, with gift card prizes for first place and a runner-up. Call 759-4677.
Resurgence announces Oktoberfest release
Resurgence Brewing Company (1250 Niagara St.) will release its annual Oktoberfest beer on Aug. 12 on draft at the brewery. The traditional Marzen style brew is malt forward with complex biscuit, caramel and toffee notes.
The brewery is also releasing fresh cans of its CitMo and Cosmic Truth IPAs (India Pale Ales) on Aug. 26 in conjunction with the Elmwood Arts Festival. Cosmic Truth will be on tap at the festival itself, and four-packs of the 16-ounce cans will be available at the brewery for $10.
Finally, Resurgence has released its Vanilla Cappuccino Pumpkin Ale in cans, available in four-packs at the brewery as well (also $10). The 7 percent ABV beer features flavors of pumpkin, spices, vanilla, and coffee. Call 381-9868.
Buffalo breweries lauded in NYS Craft Beer Competition
The results of the first annual New York State Craft Beer Competition are in, and some local breweries are boasting medals. From 707 entries all from over New York State, medals were awarded for gold, silver and bronze places in 20 categories.
Locally, Big Ditch Brewing Company won a bronze medal for its Deep Cut Double IPA in the category of American DIPAs; Thin Man Brewery won a silver medal for its Hyperballad in the category of Belgian Other, and New York Beer Project won a silver medal for its Lockport Lager in the category of Light Lagers.
