WNY Refresh calendar includes lots of bike rides, other outdoor fitness events, July 29-Aug. 5

Following is a weekly listing of upcoming public events for those interested in health, fitness, nutrition and family support.

FAMILY

Ride, Roar & Rally. Motorcycle run and family barbecue to stop child abuse. Motorcycle run starts at 10 a.m. Saturday from BW Smokin’ Barrels Barbecue, Abbott and Lake roads, Orchard Park, and continues from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cazenovia Park Casino, South Buffalo. Proceeds benefit the Lee Gross Anthone Child Advocacy Center a consortium of local law enforcement agencies, child protection, prosecution, and mental health and medical services under one roof in a child-appropriate setting to investigate, treat and support victims of child sexual and severe physical abuse. The Gathering of the Drums. Noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, 201 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls. Created by Allan Jamieson Sr., and inspired by the Spirit of Truth and Reconciliation Project, this drum festival invites all to celebrate indigenous culture and heritage, and experience the power of music to bring people together. Performers will hail from all over the world and the festival will end with a drum festival. Everyone is encouraged to bring their favorite drum or percussion instrument to join in. Free.

Family Fun on Saturday Afternoon. Noon to 5 p.m. today, next Saturday, Middle Block, Old Falls Street, Niagara Falls. Arts and crafts, interactive children’s performers, “Exercise Like the Animals” fitness sessions and block party from noon to 2 p.m. Free.

Strike Out Breast Cancer Walk. To benefit the Breast Cancer Network of WNY. Pre-game party starts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at 222 Genesee St.; walk to Coca Cola Field starts at 5:30 p.m., following by the 6 p.m. start of Buffalo Bisons “Strike Out Cancer” night. All cancer survivors will receive a free ticket to the Bisons game, courtesy of the team. Register at the pre-game party.

A Walk to Remember. 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, The GreenFields Continuing Care Community, 5949 Broadway. Inaugural event to raise funds for the WNY Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and provide educational materials for those who need them, as well as honor the lives of residents and families.

Used book sale. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday, North Tonawanda History Museum, 54 Webster St., North Tonawanda. An estimated 70,000 books for purchase at 50 cents to $1 each.

Soldiers of the Revolution. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. next Saturday and Aug. 6, Old Fort Niagara, foot of the Robert Moses Parkway, north of Youngstown. Reenactments complements daily summer programming featuring the British occupation of the fort from 1775-1783. Visitors can meet soldier and civilian reenactors from both camps, watch a battle demonstration and learn about the fort’s strategic importance to the British during the war. Events included in regular admission, which is $12 for adult, $8 for children aged 6 to 12, free for children under 5 and members of the Old Fort Niagara Association.

Veterans Welcome Home Event and Memorial Ceremony. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday, Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park, One Naval Park Cove. Ceremony will be held at noon with a reading of the names of local Service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in service during the post 9/11 conflict era. Open to all veterans and their families. A car cruise, tours of the naval ships and activities for children are part of the event. The VA Western New York Healthcare System hosts this event

Battle of the Books. 11:15 a.m. next Saturday, Erie Community College South Campus Gymnasium, 4041 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park. Public welcome to team trivia competition open to youth entering grades six through nine. The public is encouraged to attend and support their favorite library teams. This year’s Battle will honor David Fairlie, a beloved and dedicated librarian from Clarence Public Library who died earlier this year. BIKE, RUN, WALK

Checkers Running Club track sessions. 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Williamsville North High School track, 1595 Hopkins Road, Amherst. Includes Children’s Track, Zero to 5K program and training. CanAm Century Ride. Ride 35, 62 or 100 miles on both sides of the border next weekend. Includes a brewery tour on Friday and several rides on both or either side of the border next Saturday and Aug. 6. Must register at canamride.com. Cost varies per event.
