City Hallways (July 28) Jazzing it up with the Colored Musicians Club

The jazz party of the century

It was a pleasure meeting Arianna Powell and Zuri Appleby of the group A2Z, a play on the first two letters of their first names.

Appleby is from Buffalo. Powell hails from Pittsburgh. The two met in 2015 while touring together with Nick Jonas.

The duo is in Buffalo performing in the Colored Musicians Club's Jazzfest, a weeklong party all over the city celebrating the club’s 100th year.

Performances have been held at the club, located at 145 Broadway. Other locations range from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery to Pausa Art House in Allentown.

“It’s really impressive the way it has expanded from one day to six days in different venues in Buffalo,” Appleby said of the music festival.

Powell was impressed by the level of musicianship in Buffalo. “It’s a great, charming city,” she said.

A2Z takes the stage tonight for “Funk-n-Soul Friday” at the club at 7 and 10 p.m.

The CMC Jazzfest wraps up on Saturday with free music all afternoon inside and outside the club.
