12-year-old wins state girls golf; Medina's Melanie Green finishes sixth

Twelve-year-old Bailey Shoemaker, the first day leader, also had the best round in the second round Wednesday to win the Junior Girls title with a 144 at the State Junior Girls Golf Championship on the Seven Oaks course in Hamilton.

Shoemaker, of West Edmeston in Otsego County. is a NYSGA eClub-CNY associate member.

Medina High's Section VI champion Melanie Green of Shelridge, who was in second after a 73 in the first round, followed with an 83 and finished tied for sixth place.

Luke Sample, 14, of Manhattan shot 1-under 71 on the second day to go with his 72 on Tuesday to win the Sub-Junior (14 and under) title by four strokes at 143. Kris Boyes of Brighton Golf Club finished sixth with 78-77-155. Boyes had five bogeys and a double-bogey in his second round.

First day leader Matt Genaway (Attica) had a 79 in his final round and finished tied for seventh at 160 in the Junior Boys Tournament. The next best WNY finish was by Andrew Lacongo (East Aurora) who was 16th with 75-77-152.

Jude Cummings (Locust Hill), last year's Sub-Junior champion defeated Jeremy Sisson (Skaneateles) in the fourth hole of a playoff after each shot 73-72-145 in the Junior Boys Tournament.
