A flood warning is in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for the shoreline of Lake Ontario in Niagara and Orleans counties, the National Weather Service said.
The weather service also urged people to stay out of the water along the shore because of hazardous currents and waves that could be "life-threatening." The weather service called it a "high swim risk" and warned people to also stay away from piers and breakwalls.
"The combination of high lake levels and wave action may worsen flooding in low lying areas along the Lake Ontario shoreline," the weather service said.
Those in affected warning areas "should take immediate action to preserve life and property," authorities said.
