City Hallways (July 25): More safety measures at City Hall

Roll 'em on in

It’s hard to miss the 28 sphere-shaped posts called “bollards” that were installed in front of City Hall last month.

Well, 28 more of them were delivered last week and stationed on the side of building that faces the Turner Parking Ramp.

In total, 160 bollards will be installed around City Hall over the next few months at cost of $129,489. A grant from the Department of Homeland Security is funding the project.

The barriers are part of a safety enhancement project designed to protect pedestrian areas around the building and the building itself from vehicle crashes and collisions as well as from someone trying to drive a bomb-laden vehicle into the landmark that houses city government offices.

The goal is to increase safety for people who work and visit City Hall departments like the Buffalo Public Schools and the Buffalo Sewer Authority.

The project is part of the Buffalo Security Advisory Team’s plans for improving security in and around the building.

In July 2016, Mayor Byron W. Brown’s administration installed airport-style metal detectors and security guards as part of an effort to prevent a security breach. Visitors are required to go through the screening, but employees are not as long as they have their City Hall identification on them.

Celebrating summer at the South Campus

Bring your lawn chairs and picnic baskets. UB on the Green is back on Wednesday for the second installment of the summertime event.

Arts & Culture Night is this week's theme for the free, family-friendly activity.

The outdoor festival will feature music by Buffalo Afrobeat Orchestra, hands-on activities, demonstrations and workshops.

Residents, neighbors and community members are welcome.

The get-together will be held on the lawn of Hayes Hall on the University at Buffalo's South Campus from 6 to 8 p.m.
