Dominick Welch of Cheektowaga, the all-time leading scorer in Western New York basketball history, has confirmed that he will spend next year at the SPIRE Institute Men's Basketball Academy in Geneva, Ohio.
The former Warriors had said earlier in the summer that he planned to go to the Midwest school. Several reports on Monday morning indicated that Welch was set to go to the postgraduate facility. Then Welch wrote on his Twitter account, "Spire Academy '18. Lets do this."
Welch won The Buffalo News' Allen Wilson Award as the top boys basketball player in the area in 2017. The 6-foot-6 forward finished with 2,736 points in his career. Welch averaged 30.4 points and 12.2 rebounds per game for Cheektowaga last season. He scored a school-record 51 points in his final regular-season game.
Welch has not selected a college for the fall of 2018.
The Academy bills itself as "an international high school and post-graduate academy focused on developing and preparing student-athletes to be successful in college." In the spring of 2016, 19 of its players signed letters of intent with colleges, including 11 at Division I programs.
