Dog census begins in Amherst

Amherst's unregistered dogs might want to get their paperwork in. The town's dog census has started.

The census takers, who go door-to-door, are town employees who carry proper identification, said Town Clerk Marjory Jaeger. If an unregistered dog is present at a home, they will leave information on how to register their dog with the town, she said.

“We currently have about 9,500 dogs registered in the Town of Amherst,” Jaeger said in a news release. “Every year the dog census is taken we see an uptick in licensing. Our ultimate goal is to register dogs and inform our residents.”

The annual cost for licensing an unaltered dog is $13, or $5 for a neutered or spayed dog. There is a one-time $3 fee for a dog license tag. Proof of rabies vaccination is required.

Dogs can be registered at the Town Clerk’s Office, 5583 Main St. Call 631-7049 for more information.
