Sisters of St. Francis seeks buyer to operate Williamsville house for nuns

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities is putting its home for 62 nuns in Williamsville on the market.

The congregation is seeking someone to buy and operate its St. Mary of the Angels regional house, at 201 Reist St., on the condition that sisters living in the home can remain there, said Rochelle Cassella, a Sisters' spokeswoman. Eventually, lay residents also would move into the Reist Street home.

The organization wants an experienced nursing home operator to take over the cost of maintaining the property and of providing care to the aging sisters, who are among the congregation's 385 sisters in New York, Pennsylvania and Hawaii.

The Reist Street property is assessed at $4.75 million. The congregation moved there from the St. Mary of the Angels Motherhouse on Mill Street in 1999. The former motherhouse is senior housing now, and the surrounding land is Amherst State Park.
