Riso in the hunt in State Women's Amateur golf

The field has been cut to 16 for the final round of the New York State’s women’s amateur golf championship, and Western New York still has five players competing.

Sara Riso of Hamburg is the top local player, as she is tied for third with a 4-over score of 148. Riso, who plays for Siena College, followed a 71 on Wednesday with a 77 on Thursday.

Chelsea Dantonio of Fox Valley is at 12-over 156. She is tied with Crag Burn’s Elena Lopez. Victoria Parker of Orchard Park is another three shots back at 159, while Sydney Shaw of Orchard Park is at 164.

Alix Lowe of Colonial Springs Golf Club is at 2-under 142 to lead the event, which is taking place at the Schuyler Meadows Club in Loudonville (near Albany).

The Mid-Amateur championship is taking place at the same time. Julie Murphy and Kim Kaul are both only two shots back of leader Lauren Cupp after 36 holes.

Murphy of Brookfield CC and Kaul of Gowanda both are at 157, as Cupp (Yahnundasis GC, near Utica) vaulted into the lead with a 75 on Thursday. Murphy, the softball coach at Williamsville South, had been the first-round leader after a 77. No other Western New Yorkers made the cut in that event.

The final rounds of both events will be held on Friday.
