Floyd "Money" Mayweather has lived up to his nickname with $700 million in career earnings, and he's expected to make an additional $200 million next month when he fights Conor McGregor in Las Vegas. During a news conference Tuesday promoting the fight, he claimed to be holding an uncashed check for $100 million.
Nobody should begrudge Mayweather for enjoying riches that come from being the best boxer in the world. My biggest beef with him isn't his wealth. It’s that he hasn't paid his taxes. The Associated Press reported that Mayweather owes the Internal Revenue Service $21.2 million in taxes from 2015.
It's infuriating to average Americans who live paycheck to paycheck and pay their taxes every year. Mayweather owes the government far more in taxes for one year than the vast majority of people will make in their lifetimes. He actually had the audacity to complain about $26 million in past taxes he did pay.
Mayweather lives in a country that gave him an opportunity to make a fortune from something he loves. The least he could do is pay his share like other Americans, but he acts like he deserves that money. Actually, all he deserves is a left hook from Uncle Sam.
