$11.5 million center for residents with Alzheimer's to open in Amherst

A national nursing home chain is building an $11.5 million center in Amherst designed to meet the needs of people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

JEA Senior Living started construction on the 34,500-square-foot Juniper Glen Alzheimer's Special Care Center at 8820 Transit Road, just south of Transit Valley Country Club, in July 2016 and plans to open the facility by early fall, said Mimi Piciullo, Juniper Glen's administrator.

Juniper Glen will have room for 66 residents and will employ 50 to 65 workers, Piciullo said.

Juniper Glen is built and operated with the safety of residents with dementia in mind, she said. The interior is shaped in a circle for residents who like to walk, there are motion-activated sensors in residents' rooms and a licensed practical nurse is on duty 24/7. Three main meals are supplemented with three healthy snacks served daily.

This is the first center in New York for JEA, which is based in Vancouver, Wash.
