Minor earthquake recorded in Lake Ontario, north of Olcott

A small earthquake was recorded Tuesday morning beneath Lake Ontario, about 8.7 miles northeast of Olcott.

The U.S. Geological Survey's website said the 2.5 magnitude quake occurred at 2:27 a.m. about 3.1 miles beneath the bottom of the lake.

A dispatcher at the Niagara County Sheriff's Office said they received no reports from anyone who felt the quake.

A spokeswoman for the USGS said the 2.5 magnitude reading generally means an earthquake that no one can feel except in unusual circumstances.
