Seneca Nation dedicated to being a good neighbor
Since Independence Day is here, I thought it appropriate to recognize the contribution of Seneca Nation men and women who have served with great distinction in the armed forces of the United States. Service to America has always been a tradition within the Seneca Nation, and with that comes their dedication to being good neighbors to the entire Western New York community.
Recently there has been some news surrounding the Seneca Nation’s compact with New York State. Since 2002, when the Seneca gaming facilities first opened, the Seneca Nation has provided more than $1 billion to the state, with hundreds of millions of dollars coming to Western New York communities. Beyond that, the Seneca Nation also relies on a host of local businesses, and thousands of skilled employees from the area to keep its casino doors open.
While taking time to celebrate the birth of our nation’s freedom, let us not forget those Seneca men and women who have fought alongside us to protect those freedoms. Moving forward, it will be important for our local leaders to maintain an open dialogue with leaders of the Seneca Nation to ensure a lasting and mutually beneficial relationship at the local level.
