It's July 1 – happy Canada Day to our friends north of the border, and happy UFA Day to hockey fans throughout North America.

NHL free agency opened at noon Eastern time. In recent years, July 1 has provided more fireworks in the hockey world than the trade deadline. The Sabres are expected to be somewhat active today, although GM Jason Botterill already made a splash Friday by trading Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno to Minnesota for defenseman Marco Scandella and old friend Jason Pominville.
