Marcel Brooks, 25, of Buffalo. (Town of Tonawanda Police)

A Buffalo man pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree assault for causing severe injuries to a toddler in his care.

Marcel Brooks, 26, faces a maximum of 15 years in prison when he is sentenced July 28 by State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller.

According to the Erie County District Attorney's Office, Brooks was caring for his girlfriend's 22-month-old nephew on Oct. 5, 2016, in the 2600 block of Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda. Brooks shook the child, who was unresponsive when he was brought to the hospital hours later, police alleged. The child was taken to Women & Children's Hospital and diagnosed with a subdural hematoma, swelling on the brain and a spinal cord injuries, police said at the time.

The boy was severely injured and, while his condition has since improved, he is not expected to make a full recovery, prosecutors said Friday.
