Hamburg town employees say goodbye to summer hours

Most people working in Hamburg Town Hall looked forward to a bonus every summer: they got to leave a half hour early, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Town Supervisor Steven J. Walters called the custom "a very old policy that was initially brought on due to the lack of air conditioning in this world during the summer hours." He noted that air conditioning has since been implemented in all town buildings.

But as of July 10, "summer hours" for members of the white collar unit and exempt employees will disappear. It was a concession by the union during recent contract negotiations. The union also agreed that all new employees would be placed into the lowest cost health care plan, and would pay 100 percent of the difference to move up to a more expensive plan.

Pay will increase 8.5 percent over the five-year contract, which will expire Dec. 31, 2019.
