Police: Man didn't call 911 because woman wasn't dead, 'just overdosing'

A City of Tonawanda man faces a felony count of endangering the welfare of an incompetent person after police said he failed to call 911 when he found a 24-year-old woman unconscious and barely breathing in a Grove Street apartment Friday evening after an apparent drug overdose.

Tonawanda police said Juan C. Reyes, 53,  who said he lives at the Grove Street apartment on weekends, returned there to find the woman unresponsive and barely breathing. Instead of calling for help after finding the woman in distress, police said, Reyes called a friend to say, “I think she is overdosing, but wasn’t dead."

After the conversation, the friend called 911. The fire department arrived around 8 p.m. and administered Narcan to reverse the effects of the overdose. The woman was then transported to DeGraff Memorial Hospital.

After being arrested by Tonawanda police, Reyes told detectives he didn't call for help because the woman "was just overdosing." He was charged with endangering the welfare of an incompetent person, a felony.
