June E. Underkofler, who directed a nursery school in Lancaster for 25 years, died May 31 in St. Luke’s Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., from complications of sudden onset pneumonia. She was 81.
Born in Buffalo, the former June Elizabeth Farr was a 1953 graduate of Mount Mercy Academy and attended the University of Buffalo. In recent years, she lived in Lake St. Louis, Mo.
Working for Aurora Motors in East Aurora in the 1960s, she was believed to be the first full-time auto saleswoman in the area. She was honored for sales achievement in Buick’s Buffalo Zone.
In the 1980s, Mrs. Underkofler opened Carousel Nursery School in Lancaster, where parents and students knew her as “Miss June.” She owned and directed the pre-school until 2008.
Known for her enthusiasm, wit and generosity, she continually inspired her friends, her family and her pre-school youngsters to higher levels of achievement.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Norman P.; two daughters, Paula Kuehlewind and Dana Mercer; and three grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 8:45 a.m. Saturday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court at Maple Road, Amherst.
