A State Parks Police detective said Saturday that he has a "tentative identification" of a body recovered Friday from the lower Niagara River.
However, Detective Sgt. Brian Nisbet said the name won't be disclosed until the identification is positive and the man's family has been notified.
Nisbet said the body was "in an advanced state of decomposition."
The remains of a white male were discovered floating in the rapids just above the Whirlpool by a hiker in the Niagara Gorge, who phoned the news to Parks Police at 11:07 a.m. Friday. The body was pulled from the water with the aid of the Niagara Falls Fire Department.
An autopsy was conducted Saturday morning at Erie County Medical Center, but Nisbet said early Saturday afternoon he had not yet received a report on the results.
Anyone with information is being asked to call the Parks Police at 278-1777.
