The Chapel buys old Movieland 8 theater

Soon to be playing at the former Movieland 8: church services – coke and popcorn not included.

One of the area's biggest megachurches, The Chapel, has acquired the former discount moviehouse in Cheektowaga, which will become the new home for one of its three area campuses.

The church paid $1.3 million to DLC Management Corp. of Tarrytown to buy the 200 Thruway Plaza theater building, which will be upgraded to provide 32,000 square feet of space for Sunday morning church services, as well as for groups and classes that meet during the week.

The Chapel is moving from its current Cheektowaga home of the last three years at the Regal Cinemas in the Walden Galleria, where it leased space. It also maintains two other campuses in Getzville and Lockport, and wanted a more permanent location for the third site, according to McGuire Development Co. broker Vito Picone, who handled the deal.

Church officials looked at multiple sites before selecting the theater.
