Family Court petition filed against Batavia youth accused in hit-and-run

A Family Court petition has been filed against a 15-year-old Batavia boy accused of driving a car that was involved in a hit-and-run accident May 30 that injured a pedestrian and killed two dogs.

Batavia police on Wednesday said the juvenile is scheduled to appear in Family Court sometime in July.

The youth is alleged to have taken the vehicle – a gold Ford Taurus – without the owner's permission. According to police, the driver of the vehicle jumped the curb on Allen Street and struck a 32-year-old woman who was walking with her 8-year-old and two leashed dogs. The woman managed to push her son out of harm's way, but two dogs she was walking at the time were killed in the accident.

The car crashed into a telephone pole, after which the driver fled the scene but then returned, police said.

The woman was treated at a local hospital and released.
